Krishna in Indian Art - Sursagar Painting of Awadh School
Sixteenth century in medieval Indian History has been witness to a great social movement called bhakti. The expressions of devotion by the saints, mystics and poets of this movement created scintillating patterns of literary marvels, including everlasting Ramacharitmanas by Tulsidas and Sursagarby Surdas. The popularity of Krishna devotion revived by Surdas simultaneously led to the popularity of Sursagar. The compositions were compiled, illustrated and treasured in large numbers. With the decay of the Mughal Empire and the dispersal of its atelier, the regional schools became the new patrons of art. The principality of Awadh was a great centre of all forms of art, including literature, painting and music in the nineteenth century. The paintings of these two illustrated manuscripts of Sursagar, one prepared under the royal patronage and the other under the popular stream, provide a deep insight into the style and the art of the Awadh School.

Pancha Tantra Five Wise Lessons
Long ago in India, there lived an old sage named Vishnu Sharma. At that same time, there also lived a king, Amara Shakti, who had three sons. These boys were a constant worry for the king. They paid little attention to their lessons and showed no signs of ever being able to take over the kingdom.
In great anxiety the king consulted with Vishnu Sharma, who promised that in just six months he could make the princes as wise as the great lord of heaven, Indradeva. “Mighty king,” said the sage, “more important than knowledge is knowing how to use it. I will teach this to your sons. They will learn how to think, not what to think. Then they will be ready to rule the world.”
So the king sent his sons to Vishnu Sharma. The sage then began to tell them stories. “These tales of animals and men,” he said, “will awaken your intelligence and make you equal to the gods.”
